It can be a difficult task to choose furniture for your home, especially when you have different tastes to your partner. How do you come to a compromise where everyone is happy? It seems impossible, but not so when you have the furniture wizards of Oz Design on hand to help with all of your needs!
In this segment of “The Inside Word” from Channel Ten’s The Circle, Terrence and Emma Mulling pay a visit to their local Oz Design store for some advice on choosing a new sofa. Emma likes bright, fresh, creamy colours whereas Terrence prefers strong, bold, masculine colours. The only thing they agree upon is that the sofa must be child friendly!
With the help of an Oz Design expert, you can see all of your ideas come to life. Often you would not have imagined that certain textures and colours could work so well together. When in the store, take the time to look at all of the different room settings on display – they are designed to offer ideas and show you how different colours can go together.
Once you have your design ideas locked away, visit OZ Design Furniture, where staff can help you choose the right pieces of furniture for your new look home. How you light a room is not only essential to the liveability of your home but can accentuate the style of your home. OZ Design has put together some tips and guidelines to help you light your home.
To start with let’s look at the three types of lighting: General, Task and Accent. General Lighting illuminates the entire room, to the walls; Task Lighting is focused light, to help light a specific area or function; finally Accent Lighting contributes to the atmosphere, colours or style. A good lighting design will utilise and layer all three types of lighting.
Using multiple light sources will help create different moods; more diffuse light, from a number of sources, can add to a relaxing, ambient feel. Avoid using a single overhead light, which creates a cave-like effect. Consider the different uses of the room, reading, grooming etc.
Lamps can be used in a number of effective ways when lighting a room. When choosing lamps you will want to consider a number of things. Will it complement the existing decor of your room; modern looks suit simple and streamlined designs. Tapered shapes tend to compliment traditional décor, when matching a shade and base use similar shapes i.e. a large square base with a large square shade.
Finally how much light do you need the lamp to cast? If you need the lamp to generate a fair amount of light choose a more translucent shade. If it is a decorative feature, rather than a large source of light, choose an opaque shade.
Small lamps can help to light dark corners or even be placed in shelves with some knickknacks; an accent light used this way can transform and add a feature to the room. If it is a big room you can afford to be a bit more lavish. Complement a large ceiling fitting with a variety of tall floor lampstands and scattered table lamps. This is a practical, yet sumptuous, way to light a large space.
